English As A Second Language

The English as a Second Language (ESL) program covers intermediate and advanced levels of three skill areas: writing, reading, and listening/speaking. Placement is determined by the 香港六合彩开奖记录 English placement test. You are not required to take the TOEFL or IELTS to enter the ESL program. However, if you have test scores or former college experience, the ESL department will evaluate this in order to make recommendations. If you enter the ESL program at the intermediate level, you will be required to take courses in all three skills as well as the American Culture course. If you enter at the advanced level, the ESL staff will evaluate your needs and make recommendations.
The ESL program is open to International students who are on visas as well as immigrants to the U.S. who need English language support.
ESL 100: Intermediate Composition
This course is designed to introduce non-native English speakers the writing skills they need in college. Students will start at the paragraph level and move on to the five-paragraph essay.
ESL 101: Advanced Composition
This course is a college level writing class for non-native English speakers. Students will learn to write many different styles of essays and a research paper. This course satisfies the ENG 101 basic communication requirement.
ESL 110: American Culture
This class is to be taken by international students in their first semester. This course is designed to introduce American idioms, grammar and writing, as well as to familiarize students with American culture.
ESL 120: Intermediate Listening and Speaking
This course is designed to teach non-native English speakers the basics of pronunciation of American English (the sounds, intonation, stress, and rhythm).
ESL 121: Advanced Listening and Speaking
This course is designed for the non-native English speakers to improve listening comprehension, speaking, note taking, and discussion skills at the advanced level to prepare for academic coursework.
ESL 130: Intermediate Reading Skills
This course is designed to help non-native English speakers acquire the intermediate reading skills necessary for success in college. This course provides students with effective strategies for increasing vocabulary, taking notes, and reading college-level texts.
ESL 131: Advanced Reading
This course is designed to teach non-native English speakers the advanced level of reading skills necessary for success in college. This course provides students with effective strategies for increasing academic vocabulary and for developing active reading skills.
