Academic Background and Interests

As an undergraduate, I majored in mathematics and minored in computer science. I enjoyed the way the two subject areas complemented each other. I expected to work eventually in a corporate job, but in my senior year, following the recommendation of a friend, I took an education course that allowed me to observe and help out in a high school math classroom. I fell in love with teaching and decided to pursue this path after graduation. After completing a teacher preparation program, I took a position at a private American school in Sao Paulo, Brazil teaching math and computer science classes for four years. I then taught at Cairo American College for another four years before moving back to the U.S. I joined the math department at CCC in 1999, and I have been here ever since!

Personal Interests and Hobbies

Like many people who have migrated to the North Country, I am amazed at the natural beauty of the area and enjoy spending time outdoors. During summer breaks, I like to go camping, hiking, and kayaking, as much as time and weather allow. I am constantly listening to music, old and new, and try to attend at least a few live concerts every year. I am a loyal fan of my New York teams--Mets, Jets, Rangers, and Knicks--despite the heartache they cause me most years. Most importantly, I love spending time with my large and quirky family, including my eight brothers and sisters, my four children, and my cat and dog!

Keys to Success

Struggle is inevitable. Whether in school, your job, or your personal life, there will always be challenges and setbacks. See yourself as rising above these. Remind yourself that you are strong, you are capable, and you have something to offer the world. Work hard and be willing both to lend and receive a helping hand.
