Academic Background and Interests

My formal program of study was in pure mathematics, where you study math independent of any real-world applications. It delves into patterns, abstractions, and ideas. (Look up "the infinite hotel paradox" for a taste of pure mathematics.) While I still enjoy exploring these mathematics puzzles, I have shifted my focus to how cognitive theory informs math learning and how I can make small changes in my classroom to better facilitate your success. My approach to teaching is to make math understandable, approachable, and perhaps even fun! I hope to demonstrate that mathematics is not simply a collection of concepts, formulas, and calculations but, rather, a logical and analytical way of thinking about everyday life. In addition, math requires you to be precise and detail-oriented, which are valuable career skills. While you may not need to solve a quadratic equation or calculate a standard deviation in your future career, all employers want students who can think logically.

Personal Interests and Hobbies

I am a life-long resident of the North Country: the Adirondack Mountains and Lake Champlain make this an amazing place to live! I enjoy hiking, time on the lake, and exploring our region. I also have a reading addiction and welcome any book recommendations.

Keys to Success

I believe persistence and effort are the two most important components of success. Students who succeed fight to not miss class, ask questions and get help fast, practice class skills by completing all assignments, and join study groups. It is important to get off to a strong start and keep that momentum up throughout the semester.
